# Papr — Browser-First PDF Workspace

Papr is an editorial, browser-first PDF workspace for creating, editing, organizing, converting, compressing, and protecting PDF files directly within web browsers.

- Privacy-preserving: document manipulation, page rendering, and conversions execute locally in browser memory

## Workspace Modes & Capabilities
1. Organize:
   - Merge multiple PDF files into one
   - Split PDF by custom page ranges
   - Reorder pages via drag-and-drop or keyboard navigation
   - Rotate individual or all pages (90°, 180°, 270°)
   - Delete, duplicate, and extract specific sheets
   - Reverse page order and insert blank pages

2. Edit:
   - Visual overlay placement on top of existing PDF pages
   - Add custom text blocks with configurable fonts, sizes, and colors
   - Draw freehand notes and signatures
   - Place shapes: rectangles, circles, arrows, and lines
   - Insert image stamps (PNG, JPG)
   - Apply text watermarks with custom rotation and opacity
   - Insert automated page numbering (header/footer presets)
   - Note: Papr does not alter pre-baked underlying font outlines in historical PDFs like a desktop word processor; additions are rendered onto the document matrix.

3. Annotate:
   - Text highlights (semi-transparent color swatches)
   - Underline and strikethrough markup
   - Freehand pen annotations
   - Sticky note callouts and pointer arrows

4. Convert:
   - PDF to JPG, PNG, and WebP raster images
   - Choice of page selections: all pages, current page, or custom range
   - Single image download or batch ZIP archive bundling
   - Images to PDF conversion (JPG, PNG, WebP)

5. Compress:
   - Client-side canvas raster optimization with three presets: High Quality (150 DPI), Balanced (110 DPI), Maximum Compression (72 DPI)
   - Honest byte calculation: displays exact initial file size, final file size, and measured percentage reduction

6. Create:
   - Build PDFs from uploaded image collections
   - Paper size presets: A4, A3, Letter, Legal, and custom dimensions
   - Orientation (Portrait/Landscape), margin controls, and fit/fill options

7. Protect:
   - Client-side password protection and standard encryption via pdf-lib
   - Interactive password prompt for opening encrypted documents

## Technical Safeguards & Limitations
- Maximum recommended file size: 60 MB (to preserve smooth client browser memory)
- Maximum recommended pages: 300 pages per document
- Maximum concurrent batch processing: 4 workers
- All operations execute client-side; performance is dependent on the host device's CPU and available memory.
